PD2 - Riding the Climate Roller Coaster

August 30, 2017 @ 9:30 AM

Riding the Climate Rollercoaster takes participants back over the last 4.6 billion years to find the drivers of climate change throughout geological time. In this workshop participants will learn about and discuss the impact climate fluctuations have had in the past as revealed by the rock record. This PD also examines the additional impact human activity is thought to have and the geological evidence for it. The PD provides guidance on how teachers and students can access raw data to evaluate the results for themselves.

At the completion of this workshop teachers and laboratory technicians will be equipped with background information and resources, including practical activities, to assist them. Aspects of the Victorian Curriculum for years 7-10 and VCE Environmental Science will be addressed.

PD7 - Our Place in Space

August 31, 2017 @ 9:30 AM

The Earth is a complex system that works through interactions of the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere. Other bodies in the solar system demonstrate how unique Earth is and understanding both the Earth and
the other solar bodies will be vital if humans are to live sustainably on Earth and elsewhere beyond Earth.

In the second half of this program teachers and laboratory technicians will travel by public transport to Science Works
in Spotswood. There we will be visiting the planetarium for at tour offered at no extra charge. Teachers are encouraged to join MV Teachers in anticipation of this part of the program. Please see the website below:

Since this workshop takes place in 2 locations, it is preferable for teachers and laboratory technicians to arrive at Melbourne Girls’ College by public transport. Please ensure that you have a Myki card with credit to travel to and from
Spotswood. The prgramme will conclude at Spotswood at approximately 4:30.

PD9 - Plate Tectonics

September 01, 2017 @ 9:30 AM

This PD explains how the theory of Plate Tectonics was developed and how this relatively new paradigm not only
explains why the Earth is so dynamic but also how it can be used to reconstruct the past appearance of the planet, predict the most likely locations of mineral and hydrocarbon deposits and explain the distribution patterns of fossil and extant animals and plants.

At the completion of this workshop teachers and laboratory technicians will be equipped with the background information and resources, including some practical activities, to assist them with teaching the requirements of
the Victorian Curriculum, particularly Science at the Year 9 level.
